X-ray view shows how supermassive black holes speed up particles in jets



Peering deep into the guts of a blazar, astronomers have realized how particles are being accelerated to shut to the velocity of sunshine, to race away in a jet emanating from close to the blazar’s monstrous supermassive black hole.

Blazars are quasars seen head-on; a quasar is an especially energetic galactic nucleus (AGN), which is powered by a black hole accreting huge quantities of matter.
