Auroras is due to Russell McPherron effect, in which acceleration of relativistic electrons.

According to geophysicist these cracks or open region are permanent present in the south and north pole.
During the equinoxes, more solar wind can pass through the cracks and produces more frequent and brighter Auroras.
Basically cracks is not a scientific word because it's appeared in media articles.

By these open region or cracks, solar wind difference is seen during only in Equinoxes.

During equinoxes there are more solar winds, because Earth's pole is perpendicular to the Sun.
Causes maximize the coupling between Earth's magnetic field and Sun.
